“Shock and Awe Style Policing” in Ferguson

My new piece in Truthout shows that police in and around the St. Louis area shot 16 people before Michael Brown in 2014 alone. It includes insightful comments from the following experts: Philip Zimbardo – responsible for the infamous Stanford Prison Experiment – who says militarized police creates a “war zone” in which “ordinary citizens become ‘the enemy’”; the National Lawyer’s Guild’s exec director, Dan Gregor, who calls the police response to Ferguson protests “shock-and-awe-style policing”; and Dr. Peter Squires, professor of criminology and public policy at the University of Brighton in the UK, who says “[economically] unequal societies are always more violent than more egalitarian ones.”
